Nicolas de Staël a peint Le Concert, tableau immense (350×600), en trois jours, avant de se suicider, le 16 mars 1955, en se jetant de la terrasse qui surplombe son atelier, à Antibes.
Il avait 42 ans. Lui qui, après de longues années de galère, connaissait enfin le succès, se disait perdu. Dans son livre, Nicolas de Staël l’impossible Concert, Édouard Dor nous rappelle qu’une dizaine de jours avant sa mort, de Staël s’était rendu à Paris afin d’assister à deux concerts offrant des œuvres d’Anton Webern et de Schönberg.
Dor propose une interprétation du tableau Le Concert, peint immédiatement après, qui peut paraître originale, voire farfelue, mais ses explications sont crédibles : après la mort de son épouse, Jeanine, il s’est remarié avec Françoise Chapouton puis est tombé amoureux de Jeanne. Le tableau représenterait cette double relation, Françoise et Jeanne, à travers les instruments, la raison-piano et la passion-contrebasse. Édouard Dor : «Insensiblement apparaît alors l’image de la femme, de la femme double, ou de deux femmes: l’une discrète, anguleuse et passionnée; l’autre ouverte, ronde et sensuelle. Chacune à une extrémité de la toile, opposées, différentes, mais pièces essentielles d’un même orchestre, nécessaires, l’une et l’autre, à l’harmonie de l’ensemble. Deux femmes, l’épouse et l’amante, réunies, contre leur gré, par sa seule volonté ? Cette passion-contrebasse qui devient énorme, qui mange tout l’espace, jusqu’à en devenir plus imposante que la raison-piano – qui, du coup, « tourne le dos » à l’orchestre, marquant son refus de jouer, dans ces conditions, une quelconque partition.»
Les tourments, de tous temps, de Nicolas de Staël, ont probablement atteint l’insupportable en ce début d’année 1955. «Toute ma vie, j’ai eu besoin de penser peinture, de voir des tableaux, de faire de la peinture pour m’aider à vivre, me libérer de toutes les impressions, toutes les sensations, toutes les inquiétudes pour lesquelles je n’ai jamais trouvé d’autres issues que la peinture.» écrivait-il en 1952.
